Kaulachara Mantra

कौलाचार मन्त्र
Also known as: Kaula Tradition, Kaula Path, Kaula Marga

About

The Kaulachara Mantra belongs to the Kaula tradition of Tantra, a path that emphasizes the worship of Shakti through internal and external rituals, often involving a circle (chakra) of practitioners. The term 'Kaula' derives from 'Kula', meaning clan or family, and refers to the lineage of adepts who transmit these esoteric teachings. The mantra is not a single fixed verse but a class of mantras used in Kaula sadhana, as described in texts such as the Kularnava Tantra and the Kulachudamani Tantra. These mantras often incorporate the seed syllable 'Kleem' (क्लीं), which is associated with attraction and the goddess Tripura Sundari, or 'Hreem' (ह्रीं), the bija of Mahamaya. The phonetics of these bijas are considered to resonate with the subtle energies of the practitioner's body, awakening the kundalini. The primary deity is the Kaula Shakti, often identified with the goddess in her various forms like Kali or Tripura Sundari, and the mantra is used to invoke the blessings of the Kaula lineage gurus. According to the Kularnava Tantra, the Kaula path is meant for those with strong spiritual aptitude and is not recommended for the unprepared. The traditional purpose includes the attainment of siddhis (supernatural powers), liberation (moksha), and the purification of the practitioner's subtle body. Chanting is typically done in a ritual setting, often within a Kaula circle (chakra) during specific lunar phases, such as the full moon or new moon. The recommended count is 108 repetitions per session, using a rudraksha mala. Cautions are significant: these mantras should only be received through a qualified guru (diksha), as improper practice can lead to spiritual and psychological disturbances. The Kaula path is considered a 'vamachara' (left-hand) tradition, and its rituals may involve transgressive elements that require proper guidance. The mantra is also chanted for protection, prosperity, and the fulfillment of desires, but always within the framework of the Kaula lineage's ethical codes.
