Kula Mantra

कुल मन्त्र
Also known as: Kula Tradition, Divine Family, Tantric Lineage

About

The Kula Mantra is a central esoteric formula in the Kaula tradition of Tantra, representing the non-dual reality of the divine family (kula) comprising Shiva and Shakti. The term 'kula' literally means 'family' or 'clan', but in the Kaula context it signifies the totality of existence as an undivided whole. According to the Kularnava Tantra (verse 1.7), kula is the supreme reality where Shiva and Shakti are inseparably united. The mantra is often given as 'Om Kulayai Namah' or as a longer beej mantra, but the essence lies in the phoneme 'K' which, according to the Mantra-Yoga-Samhita, represents the first cause and the unity of the cosmos. The Kula Mantra is chanted for the recognition of the unity of all existence and for receiving the blessings of the tantric lineage. The Kulachudamani Tantra states that this mantra destroys duality and bestows liberation (moksha) when recited with proper initiation. Traditionally, the mantra is chanted 108 times daily, preferably at dawn or midnight, in a ritual setting that includes offerings to the guru and the divine couple. It is considered a siddha mantra (perfected) and should be received from a qualified guru in the Kaula lineage. Cautions include the need for purity of intention and adherence to the kulachara (family conduct) as outlined in the Kaula Tantras, as misuse can lead to spiritual imbalance. The mantra is especially recommended for advanced practitioners seeking non-dual realization.
