Kundalini Bhujangini Mantra

कुण्डलिनी भुजङ्गिनी मन्त्र
Also known as: Bhujangini, Serpentine, Coiled Power

About

The Kundalini Bhujangini Mantra is a potent invocation of the serpentine power (Bhujangini Shakti) that resides as the coiled Kundalini at the base of the spine. The term 'Bhujangini' derives from 'bhujanga' (serpent) and denotes the serpentine form of the primordial energy. This mantra is primarily used in Tantric and Yogic traditions for the visualization and awakening of the coiled power, facilitating its ascent through the sushumna nadi. According to the 'Shiva Samhita' (5.10-12), the Kundalini is described as a sleeping serpent coiled three and a half times around the muladhara chakra, and its awakening is essential for spiritual liberation. The 'Yoga Kundalini Upanishad' (1.1-3) similarly emphasizes the role of mantra and pranayama in arousing this dormant force. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) often associated with this mantra is 'Hreem' or 'Kleem', which correspond to the fire and attraction elements respectively, aiding in the purification and upward movement of energy. The phoneme 'Bhuj' evokes the serpentine vibration, while 'angini' signifies the embodied form. Traditional purposes include the removal of granthis (psychic knots), balancing the ida and pingala nadis, and achieving higher states of consciousness. Chanting is recommended during brahma muhurta (pre-dawn) or at night, with a minimum of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala. The practitioner should be seated in a stable posture like padmasana or siddhasana, with the spine erect. Caution is advised: this mantra should only be chanted under the guidance of a qualified guru, as premature or improper awakening can lead to physical or mental imbalances. The 'Mantra Mahodadhi' (9.45-47) warns that without proper purification and preparation, the serpent energy may cause harm. Therefore, it is traditionally preceded by purification practices and the chanting of protective mantras like the Gayatri.
