Kundalini Maha Bandha Mantra

कुण्डलिनी महा बन्ध मन्त्र
Also known as: Maha Bandha, Great Lock, Triple Lock

About

The Kundalini Maha Bandha Mantra is a sacred formula associated with the practice of Maha Bandha, the 'great lock' that integrates the three principal bandhas: Mula Bandha (root lock), Uddiyana Bandha (abdominal lock), and Jalandhara Bandha (throat lock). This mantra is chanted to master the containment and direction of prana (vital energy) and to awaken the dormant Kundalini Shakti. The textual origin of this mantra is found in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Chapter 3, verses 18-22), which describes the technique of Maha Bandha as a means to force the prana into the Sushumna nadi. Additionally, the Kundalini Upanishad (verse 9) extols the practice of the three bandhas together as essential for piercing the Brahma Granthi and raising Kundalini. The mantra itself is a beej-akshara (seed syllable) formula, often beginning with 'Om' and incorporating the bijas 'Hrim', 'Krim', or 'Aim' depending on the lineage. The phoneme 'Hrim' is associated with the fire element and transformation, 'Krim' with the power of attraction and Kali, and 'Aim' with Saraswati and wisdom. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to facilitate the simultaneous application of the three locks, which seals the prana in the torso, directs it upward, and prevents its dissipation. Benefits include the awakening of Kundalini, purification of the nadis, stabilization of the mind, and attainment of kevala kumbhaka (spontaneous breath retention). According to the Gheranda Samhita (Chapter 3, verses 10-12), Maha Bandha should be practiced after mastering the individual bandhas, and the mantra is chanted to invoke the grace of Shiva and Shakti. Recommended chanting context includes early morning or during meditation, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala. The ritual setting should be a clean, quiet space, with the practitioner seated in a stable posture like Siddhasana. Cautions: This mantra and the associated bandha practice should only be undertaken under the guidance of a qualified guru, as improper application can lead to pranic imbalances or injury. It is contraindicated for those with high blood pressure, heart conditions, or during pregnancy.
