Kundalini Yoga Nidra Mantra

कुण्डलिनी योग निद्रा मन्त्र
Also known as: Yoga Nidra, Yogic Sleep, Conscious Rest
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Kundalini Yoga Nidra Mantra is a sacred sound formula used in the practice of yogic sleep (yoga nidra) to facilitate the awakening of Kundalini Shakti, the primordial cosmic energy coiled at the base of the spine. The term 'yoga nidra' appears in classical texts such as the *Mahabharata* (Shanti Parva) and the *Yoga Sutras of Patanjali* (1.38), where it is described as a state of conscious deep sleep. In tantric traditions, particularly as expounded in the *Kundalini Upanishad* and the *Shiva Samhita*, yoga nidra is considered a powerful technique for entering the subtle channels (nadis) and activating the chakras. The mantra itself often incorporates the bija (seed) syllable 'Hrim' or 'Krim', which are associated with the goddess Tripura Sundari and Kali respectively, as per the *Mantra Mahodadhi* (Chapter 5).

These bija syllables resonate with the fire element and the transformative power of Kundalini. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to induce a state of profound relaxation while maintaining inner awareness, allowing the practitioner to access the subconscious mind and integrate suppressed impressions (samskaras). It is also used to cultivate the witness consciousness (sakshi bhava), as described in the *Bhagavad Gita* (2.47) and the *Yoga Vasistha* (Nirvana Prakarana). Recommended chanting context includes a quiet, dark room, preferably during the early morning or late evening.

The practitioner should lie in shavasana (corpse pose) and mentally repeat the mantra with each breath cycle. A typical count is 108 repetitions using a japa mala, or continuous chanting for 15–30 minutes. Cautions: This mantra should only be practiced under the guidance of a qualified guru, as premature or forceful awakening of Kundalini can lead to physical or psychological imbalances. It is not recommended for individuals with severe mental health conditions or epilepsy.

The *Tantraloka* of Abhinavagupta emphasizes the importance of proper initiation and purification before undertaking such practices.
