Maha Bandha Dhyana Mantra (Final)

महा बन्ध ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Maha Bandha, Great Lock, Triple Lock

About

The Maha Bandha Dhyana Mantra is a contemplative formula associated with the advanced yogic technique known as Maha Bandha, the 'Great Lock.' This practice integrates three internal locks: Mula Bandha (root lock), Uddiyana Bandha (abdominal lock), and Jalandhara Bandha (throat lock). The mantra is chanted to master the simultaneous application of these three bandhas, which is said to contain and direct prana (vital energy) into the central channel (sushumna), thereby awakening the dormant kundalini shakti. The textual origin of Maha Bandha is found in classical hatha yoga scriptures. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (3.18-22) describes the technique of Maha Bandha as a combination of the three bandhas, stating that it stops the upward movement of prana and forces it into the sushumna. The Gheranda Samhita (3.21-24) similarly details the practice, emphasizing its role in arresting the flow of breath and energy. In the tantric tradition, the mantra is often associated with the deity Shiva as the supreme yogi and Shakti as the kundalini power. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Om' is typically prefixed, representing the primordial vibration that unifies the three bandhas. The phoneme 'Hum' may also be used to seal the practice. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to facilitate the experience of samadhi by channeling prana into the brahma randhra (crown chakra). Benefits include control over the autonomic nervous system, increased vitality, and spiritual awakening. Recommended chanting context: ideally chanted mentally during the actual practice of Maha Bandha, after mastering each individual bandha. The practice is best done in the early morning (brahma muhurta) on an empty stomach. The count may vary, but 108 repetitions of the mantra are common in a seated meditation posture. Cautions: Maha Bandha should only be attempted under the guidance of a qualified guru, as improper practice can cause energy imbalances or injury. Those with high blood pressure, heart conditions, or abdominal issues should avoid this practice. The mantra is not to be chanted casually but reserved for serious sadhana.
