महाविद्या देवता ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Mahavidya Devata, Ten Goddesses, Wisdom Deities
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Mahavidya Devata Dhyana Mantra (Final) is a set of meditation verses dedicated to the Dasha Mahavidyas, the ten wisdom goddesses of Tantric Hinduism. These dhyana mantras are used for visualizing and contemplating each of the ten forms: Kali, Tara, Tripura Sundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Chinnamasta, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi, and Kamala. The textual origin of these mantras is found in the Mahavidya Tantras, a corpus of Tantric scriptures that detail the worship and iconography of the goddesses. According to the Mahavidya Tantras, each goddess embodies a distinct aspect of supreme wisdom (vidya) and represents a different phase of cosmic energy.

The mantras typically include beejaksharas (seed syllables) such as 'Kreem' for Kali, 'Hreem' for Bhuvaneshwari, and 'Aim' for Matangi, which are phonetically designed to resonate with the subtle energies of the respective deities. The traditional purpose of chanting these dhyana mantras is to attain spiritual knowledge, protection, and liberation. The Devi Mahatmya (also known as Durga Saptashati) references the ten Mahavidyas as emanations of the supreme goddess, and the Shaktisangama Tantra elaborates on their individual sadhanas. Practitioners chant these mantras for blessings of wisdom, removal of obstacles, and fulfillment of desires.

The recommended chanting context includes early morning or midnight, with a count of 108 repetitions per goddess using a rudraksha or crystal mala. Ritual setting involves a clean space, an image or yantra of the Mahavidyas, and offerings of red flowers, incense, and lamps. Cautions: These mantras are considered powerful and should be chanted with proper initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as per Tantric tradition. Without guidance, the intense energies may cause disturbances.

The Lalita Sahasranama also extols the Mahavidyas as forms of the goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari, emphasizing their role in the path of knowledge.
