Mantra Nyasa Dhyana Mantra

मन्त्र न्यास ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Mantra Nyasa, Placement, Seating
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Mantra Nyasa Dhyana Mantra is a meditative verse used during the ritual of nyasa, the placement of mantras on specific parts of the body. This practice is foundational in Tantric and Agamic traditions, as described in texts such as the *Mantra Mahodadhi* and the *Shaktisangama Tantra*. Nyasa involves mentally or physically touching various limbs while chanting bija (seed) mantras, thereby infusing the body with divine energy and purifying it for worship. The dhyana mantra serves as a contemplative aid, allowing the practitioner to visualize the installation of mantra power within the body, transforming it into a sacred vessel.

The bija syllables commonly used in nyasa, such as 'Om', 'Hrim', 'Klim', and 'Aim', are considered phonemic representations of cosmic forces; their precise articulation and placement are believed to activate corresponding energy centers (chakras). According to the *Mantra-Yoga-Samhita*, nyasa is essential for mantra siddhi (perfection) as it aligns the microcosm of the body with the macrocosm of the deity. The traditional purpose of this mantra is twofold: purification of the limbs (anga shuddhi) and embodiment of sacred sound, enabling the practitioner to become a living yantra. Recommended chanting context includes daily ritual practice (nitya puja), especially before japa or homa, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala.

The ideal time is during brahma muhurta (pre-dawn) or after bathing. Cautions: nyasa should be performed with a focused mind and proper pronunciation, as errors are said to disrupt the energy flow. Beginners are advised to learn from a qualified guru, as the *Tantras* warn against improper practice leading to spiritual imbalance. This mantra is not for casual recitation but for initiated practitioners within a structured sadhana.
