Navavarana Mantra

नवावरण मन्त्र
Also known as: Nine Enclosures, Sri Chakra Avaranas, Chakra Puja
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Navavarana Mantras are a set of nine groups of mantras used in the worship of the nine enclosures (avaranas) of the Sri Chakra, the primary yantra of the Sri Vidya tradition. Each avarana corresponds to a concentric layer of the Sri Chakra, representing progressive stages of cosmic manifestation and spiritual evolution. The mantras are integral to the ritual known as Avarana Puja, which is detailed in texts such as the *Vamakeshvara Tantra* and the *Yogini Hridaya*. The nine enclosures are: Trailokyamohana (Bindu), Sarvashapura (Triangular), Sarvasamkshobhana (Six-pointed star), Sarvasaubhagyadayaka (Ten-pointed star), Sarvarthasadhaka (Fourteen-pointed star), Sarvarakshakara (Eight-petalled lotus), Sarvarogahara (Sixteen-petalled lotus), Sarvasiddhiprada (Eight-cornered outer circle), and Sarvanandamaya (Square with three lines).

Each enclosure is presided over by a specific group of deities, with Tripura Sundari as the central goddess. The beej-aksharas (seed syllables) for each avarana are derived from the Panchadashi Mantra, as explained in the *Lalita Sahasranama* (verse 184-188). For example, the first avarana uses 'ka' and 'e' bijas, while the second uses 'ha' and 'la'. The phonemes are arranged in a specific sequence to invoke the corresponding energies.

The traditional purpose of chanting these mantras is to attain spiritual mastery (siddhi) and realize the unity of the individual self with the cosmic goddess. Benefits include purification of the mind, removal of obstacles, and fulfillment of desires when chanted with proper intention. Recommended chanting context is during the Navavarana Puja, typically performed at dawn or dusk, with a count of 108 repetitions per avarana using a rudraksha mala. The ritual setting requires a consecrated Sri Chakra, offerings of flowers and incense, and strict adherence to purity rules.

Cautions: These mantras are considered highly potent and should only be chanted after initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as per the *Mantra Mahodadhi* (Chapter 7). Improper chanting without guidance may lead to adverse effects.
