Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The mantra 'Om Shreem Hreem Kleem' is a powerful combination of three primary bija (seed) syllables, each representing a distinct divine energy. According to the 'Mantra Mahodadhi' (a key tantric text), the syllable 'Shreem' (श्रीं) is the bija of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, and abundance. It is composed of the phonemes 'śa', 'ra', 'ī', and 'm', with the nasalization (bindu) indicating the ultimate reality. 'Hreem' (ह्रीं) is described in the 'Shaktisangama Tantra' as the bija of Mahamaya or Bhuvaneshwari, the goddess of cosmic illusion and sovereignty. Its phonemes 'ha', 'ra', 'ī', and 'm' evoke the transformative power of divine will.

'Kleem' (क्लीं) is the bija of Kama (desire), Kali (time), and Krishna (attraction), as per the 'Tantraraja Tantra'. It consists of 'ka', 'la', 'ī', and 'm', symbolizing the creative and magnetic force of the universe. The prefix 'Om' (ॐ) represents the primordial sound from which all creation emanates. Combined, these syllables form a comprehensive mantra for material and spiritual prosperity. Traditional purposes include attracting wealth (Shreem), removing obstacles and granting protection (Hreem), and enhancing charisma and love (Kleem).

The 'Devi Mahatmya' and 'Lalita Sahasranama' also reference these bijas in the context of the goddess's multifaceted nature. Recommended chanting context: ideally recited 108 times daily during sunrise or sunset, facing east or north, after a bath and in a clean space. A rudraksha or crystal mala may be used. The mantra is often chanted during Navaratri and Diwali for invoking the goddess's blessings. Cautions: due to its potent tantric nature, it should be chanted with proper intention and under the guidance of a guru, especially when seeking spiritual siddhis.

It is not recommended for those with impure motives, as the energies can amplify both positive and negative tendencies. The 'Mantra-Yoga-Samhita' advises that the practitioner maintain a sattvic diet and mental purity for best results.
