Sambhavi Diksha Mantra

साम्भवी दीक्षा मन्त्र
Also known as: Subtle Initiation, Gaze Transmission, Shiva Diksha
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

Sambhavi Diksha is a form of initiation (diksha) in the Tantric and Kashmir Shaivism traditions, characterized by its subtle and non-verbal transmission of spiritual power. Unlike mantric or physical initiations, Sambhavi Diksha is imparted through the guru's gaze (drishti) or mere intention (sankalpa), awakening the disciple's higher consciousness directly. The term 'Sambhavi' derives from 'Sambhu' (Shiva), indicating that this initiation is a manifestation of Shiva's grace. According to the 'Mantra-Yoga-Samhita' (Chapter 5), Sambhavi Diksha is considered the highest form of initiation, transcending the need for external rituals or mantras.

The 'Shaktisangama Tantra' (Sundari Khanda) describes it as the transmission of shaktipata (descent of energy) through the guru's compassionate gaze, which purifies the disciple's subtle channels and awakens the dormant Kundalini. The associated mantra 'Om Sambhavi' is a beej-akshara (seed syllable) that embodies the essence of this initiation; 'Om' represents the primordial sound and universal consciousness, while 'Sambhavi' invokes the energy of Shiva. Phonetically, the mantra's resonance aligns with the ajna chakra, facilitating inner vision and intuitive knowledge. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to invoke the guru's grace for spiritual awakening, removal of karmic blockages, and realization of non-dual consciousness (advaita).

It is chanted during initiation ceremonies, often in a one-to-one setting between guru and disciple, with the guru fixing his gaze on the disciple's third eye. Recommended chanting count is 108 repetitions during sunrise or sunset, in a meditative posture, with focus on the breath and the space between the eyebrows. Cautions include that this mantra should only be received from a qualified guru who has themselves undergone Sambhavi Diksha, as improper practice may lead to energetic imbalances. The 'Devi Mahatmya' (Chapter 11) indirectly references such subtle initiation through the goddess's glance, highlighting its transformative power.

In Kashmir Shaivism, as expounded in the 'Shiva Sutras' (Sutra 1.13), Sambhavi Diksha corresponds to the state of 'iccha-shakti' (will power) where the guru's will alone suffices for transmission. This mantra is thus a key to accessing the highest spiritual states through the grace of Shiva and the living lineage of gurus.
