Sanatkumara Mantra

सनत्कुमार मन्त्र
Also known as: Sanatkumara, Eternal Youth, Kumara of Wisdom
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Sanatkumara Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Sanatkumara, the foremost of the four Kumaras (Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana, and Sanatkumara) born from the mind of Lord Brahma. According to the Sanatkumara Samhita, a section of the Skanda Purana, Sanatkumara is an eternal youth (nitya-kumara) who embodies pure wisdom and liberation. The mantra is primarily chanted for spiritual wisdom (jnana), eternal youth, and the blessings of this immortal sage. The primary beej-akshara associated with Sanatkumara is 'Kleem' (क्लीं), which represents attraction and wisdom, though the simple mantra 'Om Sanatkumaraya Namah' is also widely used.

The Sanatkumara Gayatri, as found in the Sanatkumara Samhita, is: 'Om Sanatkumaraya Vidmahe, Chiranjivine Dhimahi, Tanno Kumarah Prachodayat.' This Gayatri invokes Sanatkumara as the eternal youth and guide. The mantra is traditionally chanted for longevity, clarity of thought, and freedom from the cycle of birth and death. According to the Devi Mahatmya, Sanatkumara is also a teacher of the Devi's glory, and his mantra is used in tantric practices for wisdom and protection. Recommended chanting context: 108 repetitions daily, preferably at dawn or dusk, facing east or north.

A japa mala of crystal or tulsi beads is used. The mantra is also chanted during Kumara Puja, a festival honoring the Kumaras. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with purity of mind and body; it is not recommended for material gains. The Sanatkumara Samhita emphasizes that the mantra is most effective when received from a qualified guru.

The Puranas describe Sanatkumara as a guide to seekers, and his mantra is considered a path to liberation (moksha).
