Sandhi Vigraha Mantra

सन्धि विग्रह मन्त्र
Also known as: Peace and War, Foreign Policy, Rajya Niti

About

The Sandhi Vigraha Mantra is a sacred formula from the tradition of Hindu statecraft, primarily associated with the two fundamental policies of foreign relations: Sandhi (peace, treaty, alliance) and Vigraha (war, hostility, conflict). These concepts are central to the Rajadharma (duty of kings) as expounded in the Arthashastra of Kautilya (Chanakya), where the six-fold policy (Shadguna) includes Sandhi and Vigraha as primary options. The mantra is chanted to invoke divine guidance for rulers and statesmen in making correct decisions between peace and war, ensuring the protection and prosperity of the kingdom. The deities associated are Brihaspati (Jupiter), the guru of the gods and lord of wisdom, and Shukra (Venus), the guru of the asuras and master of diplomacy. According to the Brihaspati Samhita and the Shukra Niti, these planetary deities preside over counsel and statecraft. The mantra may incorporate the beej-aksharas (seed syllables) 'Om' and 'Hrim' to invoke their energies. Phonetically, 'Sandhi' contains the 'sa' sound representing stability, and 'Vigraha' contains 'vi' representing separation, reflecting the dual nature of policy. The traditional purpose is to attain clarity in foreign policy, to know when to make peace and when to wage war, and to ensure victory and security. It is recommended to chant this mantra during the early morning or before important diplomatic meetings, ideally 108 times using a rudraksha mala, while visualizing a balanced scale or a royal court. Cautions include not chanting with malicious intent to harm others, as the mantra is meant for righteous statecraft (Dharma-yuddha) as per the Mahabharata (Shanti Parva). The mantra is also linked to the Niti Shastra tradition, which includes texts like the Kamandakiya Nitisara. It is chanted during statecraft rituals and royal consecrations, especially in Pan-India regions where traditional governance principles are respected. The iconography symbolizes the balance of peace and war, the wisdom of foreign policy, and the protection of the kingdom.
