Sri Vidya Guru Parampara Dhyana Mantra

श्री विद्या गुरु परम्परा ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Guru Parampara, Lineage, Sri Vidya Masters
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Sri Vidya Guru Parampara Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation of the unbroken lineage of gurus who have transmitted the esoteric knowledge of Sri Vidya. This mantra is not found in a single text but is compiled from various Sri Vidya traditions, with its roots in the Guru Gita (part of the Skanda Purana) and the Sri Vidya texts such as the Mantra Mahodadhi and the Shaktisangama Tantra. The Guru Gita (verse 76) states, 'Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwarah,' establishing the guru as the embodiment of the trimurti. The Sri Vidya parampara traditionally begins with the primordial guru, Shiva (Dakshinamurti), and descends through sages like Agastya, Lopamudra, and the acharyas of the Kanchi and Sringeri mathas. The mantra consists of dhyana shlokas that visualize the lineage masters, often starting with 'Om Hreem Shreem' or 'Om Aim Hreem Shreem' as beejaksharas.

The phoneme 'Hreem' (ह्रीं) is the bija of Mahamaya and represents the cosmic sound of transformation, while 'Shreem' (श्रीं) invokes Lakshmi and abundance. 'Aim' (ऐं) is the bija of Saraswati and knowledge. Together, they align the chanter with the threefold shakti of the goddess. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to receive the blessings of the parampara, ensuring correct transmission of Sri Vidya sadhana and preventing deviations. It is chanted for spiritual protection, clarity in practice, and the grace of the gurus.

Recommended chanting context includes daily practice at dawn or dusk, especially on Guru Purnima, with a minimum of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or sphatika mala. The ritual setting should include a picture or yantra of the lineage gurus, with offerings of flowers and incense. Cautions: This mantra should only be chanted after receiving initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru in the Sri Vidya parampara, as per the tradition outlined in the Tantrasara and the Parashurama Kalpa Sutra. Without initiation, the mantra may not yield the desired results and could lead to spiritual imbalance. The practitioner must maintain strict purity of body and mind, and avoid chanting during impure states or without proper focus.
