Sri Vidya Maha Yantra Dhyana Mantra

श्री विद्या महा यन्त्र ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Sri Yantra, Maha Yantra, Sri Chakra

About

The Sri Vidya Maha Yantra Dhyana Mantra is a set of meditation verses (dhyana slokas) used for contemplating the Sri Yantra, also known as the Sri Chakra, the foremost yantra in the Sri Vidya tradition. The Sri Yantra is a geometric representation of the cosmos and the body of the goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari, the supreme deity of Sri Vidya. According to the Bhavana Upanishad, the Sri Chakra consists of nine enclosures (navavarana), each associated with a specific aspect of the goddess and a mantra. The dhyana mantras guide the practitioner through these enclosures, from the outermost square to the central bindu, facilitating absorption into the cosmic geometry and realization of the supreme goddess. The Lalita Sahasranama (verse 54) describes the Sri Yantra as the abode of the goddess, stating 'Srichakraraja nilaya' (she who resides in the king of chakras). The mantras are typically chanted during puja or meditation, often with offerings of flowers and incense. The recommended count is 108 repetitions per enclosure, and the practice is best performed in the morning or during auspicious times like Navaratri. The beejakshara 'Shreem' is central to the Sri Vidya tradition and is often incorporated into the dhyana mantras. Phonetically, 'Shreem' combines the sounds 'Sh' (Shakti), 'R' (Ravi, the sun), and 'Eem' (the feminine principle), invoking abundance and grace. The purpose of these mantras is to purify the mind, align the practitioner with the cosmic order, and ultimately achieve union with the goddess. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (a key tantric text), the Sri Yantra dhyana is essential for attaining siddhis and liberation. Cautions include the need for proper initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as the mantras are considered powerful and potentially destabilizing without guidance. The practitioner should maintain purity of body and mind, and avoid chanting during impure states. The Sri Vidya tradition holds that regular practice of this dhyana mantra leads to the fulfillment of desires, spiritual elevation, and the grace of Lalita Tripura Sundari.
