Sri Vidya Mantra (Advanced)

श्री विद्या मन्त्र
Also known as: Sri Vidya, Lalita Tripura Sundari, Supreme Wisdom
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Sri Vidya tradition is one of the most esoteric and revered paths in Hindu tantra, centering on the worship of the goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari. The term 'Sri Vidya' means 'sacred knowledge' and refers both to the goddess and the body of teachings that lead to non-dual realization. The primary mantras of this tradition are the Panchadashi (15-syllable) and Shodashi (16-syllable) mantras, which are considered the condensed essence of the Vedas and Tantras. According to the Tripura Upanishad (verses 1-15), these mantras embody the supreme consciousness as the union of Shiva and Shakti.

The Panchadashi mantra, also known as the 'Panchadasakshari,' is composed of three groups of five syllables each, representing the goddess's forms as Vagbhava, Kamaraja, and Shakti. The Shodashi mantra adds a sixteenth syllable, often a seed syllable like 'Shrim,' to complete the cycle. The Lalita Sahasranama (verse 1) describes the goddess as 'Chidagni-kunda-sambhuta' (born from the fire of consciousness), indicating the mantras' power to ignite spiritual awakening. The beej-aksharas 'Ka,' 'E,' 'I,' 'La,' 'Hrim,' 'Ha,' 'Sa,' 'Ka,' 'La,' 'Hrim,' and 'Sa,' 'Ka,' 'La,' 'Hrim' form the core of these mantras, each phoneme corresponding to a specific energy center in the subtle body.

Traditional purposes include the attainment of liberation (moksha), the grace of the supreme goddess, and the fulfillment of worldly desires when chanted with proper initiation. The recommended chanting context is during the bright fortnight, especially on full moon nights, with a count of 108 or 1008 repetitions per session. Ritual setting involves a clean space, a Sri Chakra yantra, and offerings of red flowers and incense. Cautions: These mantras require initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as improper chanting can lead to spiritual imbalance.

The Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 11) warns that the Sri Vidya should be approached with devotion and secrecy. Advanced practitioners may also chant the Lalita Sahasranama as a complementary practice.
