Swadhisthana Chakra Mantra

स्वाधिष्ठान चक्र मन्त्र
Also known as: Sacral Center, Pelvic Chakra, Swadhisthana
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Swadhisthana Chakra Mantra is the beej (seed) mantra 'VAM' (वं), which corresponds to the second chakra in the yogic subtle body system. The term 'Swadhisthana' means 'one's own abode' or 'dwelling place of the self,' indicating its role as a foundational energy center. According to the 'Shat-Chakra-Nirupana' (a key text from the 'Tantrik' tradition, part of the 'Serpent Power' by Sir John Woodroffe), this chakra is located at the base of the sacrum, just above the Muladhara, and is associated with the water element (apas tattva). The beej mantra 'VAM' is considered the sonic representation of this element; the phoneme 'V' is a labial sound linked to fluidity, and the nasalization (bindu) indicates completeness.

The 'Mantra-Yoga-Samhita' describes that chanting 'VAM' activates the sacral center, governing creativity, sexuality, emotional balance, and the sense of taste. The deity associated with this chakra is Vishnu, who presides over preservation and pleasure, while Brahma is also mentioned in some traditions as the creator aspect. The chakra is depicted with six vermilion petals, each bearing a Sanskrit letter: ब, भ, म, य, र, ल. The animal symbol is a crocodile (makara), representing the watery, instinctual nature.

Traditional purposes include enhancing artistic expression, harmonizing relationships, and purifying emotional blockages. The recommended chanting context is during meditation, ideally at dawn or dusk, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala. The 'Devi Mahatmya' (also known as 'Durga Saptashati') indirectly references the chakras in its esoteric interpretations, linking the sacral center to the goddess Chandika. Cautions: Overemphasis on this mantra without grounding in the root chakra may lead to emotional instability or excessive attachment to pleasure; hence, it is advised to practice under guidance and balance with Muladhara meditation.

The 'Kundalini Upanishad' warns that premature awakening of Swadhisthana without purification can cause lust and distraction. Thus, the mantra is best chanted with pure intent and in conjunction with ethical living (yama-niyama).
