Tantra Diksha Dhyana Mantra

तन्त्र दीक्षा ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Tantra Diksha, Initiation, Transmission
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Tantra Diksha Dhyana Mantra is a contemplative formula used within the tradition of tantric initiation (diksha). Its textual origins lie in the corpus of Tantras, particularly the Diksha texts such as the Tantraraja Tantra and the Shaktisangama Tantra, which delineate the procedures for transmitting spiritual power from guru to disciple. The mantra is associated with the deity as Guru, Shiva, or Shakti, depending on the specific lineage. In the Shaiva and Shakta traditions, the guru is considered an embodiment of Shiva or the Divine Mother, and the mantra serves as a vehicle for invoking their grace.

The beej-akshara (seed syllable) often embedded in such mantras is 'Hreem' or 'Gam', representing the heart center and the guru principle respectively. Phonetically, these syllables resonate with the ajna chakra, facilitating concentration and inner awakening. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to prepare the disciple's mind for the transmission of shaktipat (descent of power) and to invoke the guru's blessings for a successful initiation. It is chanted during the diksha ceremony itself, often 108 times or more, in a purified space with offerings of flowers and incense.

The recommended time is during the auspicious lunar phase chosen by the guru, typically at dawn or noon. Regular chanting of this dhyana mantra is believed to purify the nadis, awaken kundalini, and establish a strong bond between guru and disciple. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, such mantras should be received directly from a qualified guru and not practiced without proper initiation. Cautions include the necessity of a pure diet, celibacy during the practice period, and avoidance of chanting in unclean places.

The mantra is not for casual use; it is a sacred tool for those on the tantric path seeking spiritual transformation.
