Vashishtha Mantra

वशिष्ठ मन्त्र
Also known as: Vashishtha Muni, Sage of the Ramayana, Rajguru

About

The Vashishtha Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Sage Vashishtha, one of the seven great sages (Saptarishi) and the royal preceptor (Rajguru) of the Ikshvaku dynasty. According to the Valmiki Ramayana (Bala Kanda, Sarga 1-2), Vashishtha was the guru of Lord Rama and his brothers, imparting spiritual and temporal wisdom. The mantra is primarily chanted for spiritual guidance, wisdom, and the blessings of the sage. The core mantra 'Om Vashishthaya Namah' is a simple yet potent salutation, where 'Om' is the primordial sound, 'Vashishthaya' is the dative form of Vashishtha, and 'Namah' means bowing or salutation. This mantra does not contain a specific beej-akshara (seed syllable) but derives its power from the name of the sage, who is considered a Brahmarshi and a master of the Vedas. The Yoga Vashishtha, a philosophical text attributed to Vashishtha, contains dialogues on Advaita Vedanta and is chanted for liberation (moksha) and self-realization. Traditionally, the Vashishtha Mantra is chanted for overcoming obstacles in education, gaining clarity of thought, and receiving the guru's grace. It is recommended to chant 108 times daily, preferably in the morning after bathing, facing east or north. The ideal time is during Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn) or on Guru Purnima, the festival dedicated to gurus. No specific cautions are recorded, but as with all guru mantras, purity of intention and respect are essential. The mantra is also associated with the sage's consort Arundhati, symbolizing marital harmony and virtue. The iconography of Vashishtha often depicts him with a beard, holding a kamandalu (water pot) and akshamala (rosary), seated with Arundhati, teaching Rama. This mantra is pan-Indian in worship and is revered in both Smarta and Tantric traditions.
