Vastu Purusha Devata Dhyana Mantra (Final)

वास्तु पुरुष देवता ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Vastu Purusha, Deity of Architecture, Space Deity

About

The Vastu Purusha Devata Dhyana Mantra (Final) is a meditative invocation of Vastu Purusha, the cosmic being who embodies the site and structure of a dwelling. According to the Mayamata, an ancient Vastu Shastra text, Vastu Purusha is the presiding deity of the built environment, lying prone within the plot with his head in the northeast and feet in the southwest. The dhyana mantra is chanted to visualize his form and invoke his presence for harmony and protection. The Brihat Samhita (chapter 53) describes the Vastu Purusha as a colossal figure covering the entire site, with specific body parts corresponding to different zones. The mantra itself is a final, refined version used in advanced Vastu rituals, often recited after preliminary purifications. It typically includes the beej-akshara 'Om' and the name 'Vastu Purushaya,' with the dhyana portion focusing on his iconography: a four-armed deity holding a lotus, a staff, a pot, and a book, symbolizing purity, stability, abundance, and knowledge. The phoneme 'Vas' in 'Vastu' relates to dwelling, while 'Purusha' denotes the cosmic person, echoing the Purusha Sukta (Rigveda 10.90) where the primal being is the source of creation. The mantra's purpose is to align the structure with cosmic order (Rta), ensuring peace, prosperity, and health for inhabitants. Traditional benefits include removal of Vastu doshas (architectural defects), protection from negative energies, and enhancement of positive vibrations. The recommended chanting context is during Griha Pravesh (housewarming) or Vastu Shanti ceremonies, ideally at sunrise or midday, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala. Ritual setting involves facing east or north, with offerings of flowers, incense, and a lamp. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted only after proper initiation or guidance from a qualified guru, as it is considered a tantric practice. It is not recommended for those without a stable daily sadhana, and should be avoided during inauspicious periods like eclipses or shraddha days. The mantra is pan-Indian in worship, with variations in different Agamas and Tantras.
