Vishuddhi Chakra Dhyana Mantra

विशुद्धि चक्र ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Throat Center, Purification Center, Vishuddhi
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Vishuddhi Chakra Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation for the fifth primary chakra, located at the throat. Its core bija (seed syllable) is 'हं' (Haṃ), which according to the *Shiva Samhita* (5.72-75) represents the pure ether element (ākāśa) and is the sonic essence of the space element. The mantra is used to purify and activate the Vishuddhi Chakra, which governs communication, self-expression, truth, and creativity. The *Ṣaṭ-Cakra-Nirūpaṇa* (verse 22-24) describes this chakra as a sixteen-petaled lotus, each petal bearing a Sanskrit vowel, and states that meditation on this center grants mastery over speech and the ability to move through the elements.

The bija 'Haṃ' is chanted to resonate in the throat region, stimulating the thyroid and parathyroid glands and balancing the ether element. Traditional practice, as outlined in the *Gheranda Samhita* (5.73-78), recommends chanting the mantra 108 times daily, preferably at dawn or dusk, in a seated posture with the spine erect and attention focused on the throat. The mantra is also used in tantric rituals for purification (vishuddhi) of the subtle body, as detailed in the *Mantra Mahodadhi* (chapter 7), where it is employed to remove impurities from the speech and mind. Benefits include enhanced clarity of thought, improved communication skills, and the ability to speak one's truth with compassion.

The mantra is associated with the deity Sadashiva, the eternal aspect of Shiva, who presides over the ether element and the power of sound (śabda). According to the *Kularnava Tantra* (verse 9.45-48), chanting this mantra with devotion can lead to siddhis (spiritual powers) such as poetic genius and the ability to influence others through speech. Cautions: The mantra should be chanted with correct pronunciation and under the guidance of a qualified guru, as improper practice may lead to throat discomfort or energetic imbalances. It is recommended to avoid chanting during illness or when emotionally agitated.

The Vishuddhi Chakra Dhyana Mantra is a powerful tool for awakening the throat center and aligning one's expression with divine will.
