Vishuddhi Chakra Mantra

विशुद्धि चक्र मन्त्र
Also known as: Throat Center, Purification Center, Vishuddhi

About

The Vishuddhi Chakra Mantra, primarily the seed syllable 'HAM' (हं), is a foundational bija mantra in Tantric and yogic traditions. Its textual origin is found in the 'Shiva Samhita' (5.72-76) and the 'Yoga Kundalini Upanishad' (1.79-82), where it is described as the sound of the ether element (akasha) residing at the throat center. The mantra is associated with the deity Sadashiva, the five-faced aspect of Shiva who presides over the chakra, as detailed in the 'Sat-Chakra-Nirupana' (verse 30-31) of the 'Tantric Texts' series. The bija 'HAM' is composed of the phoneme 'Ha' (the aspirated guttural) and the nasal 'M' (anusvara), representing the union of prana (vital force) and apana (downward energy), according to 'Mantra-Yoga-Samhita' (chapter 4). The sixteenth petal of the Vishuddhi Chakra is said to contain all the Sanskrit vowels, and the mantra 'HAM' is considered the essence of these sounds. Traditionally, the mantra is chanted for purification of speech, enhanced communication, self-expression, and truthfulness. It is believed to awaken the throat energy center, facilitating clarity of thought and expression. The recommended chanting context includes meditation on the chakra at the base of the throat, visualized as a sixteen-petaled lotus of smoky purple hue. The ideal time is during Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn) or during twilight. The count is typically 108 repetitions (one mala) or multiples thereof, using a crystal or rudraksha mala. Ritual setting involves a quiet space, with focus on the ether element and the sound vibration. Cautions: According to 'Mantra Mahodadhi' (chapter 7), the mantra should not be chanted without proper initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as improper practice may lead to throat ailments or energy imbalances. It is also advised to avoid chanting during illness or when emotionally disturbed. The mantra is widely used in chakra meditation and yoga practices across India and globally.
