Yogini Kaula Mantra

योगिनी कौल मन्त्र
Also known as: Yogini Kaula, Female Lineage, Shakti Kaula

About

The Yogini Kaula Mantra belongs to the esoteric Kaula tradition of Tantra, which emphasizes the worship of the feminine divine through a lineage of Yoginis—female adepts and deities. The term 'Kaula' derives from 'Kula', meaning clan or family, and in this context refers to the spiritual family of Shakti. The Yogini Kaula path is distinct for its focus on the direct realization of Shakti through the grace of the Yoginis, who are considered embodiments of various aspects of the Goddess. According to the 'Yogini Tantras', these mantras are revealed through the lineage of female gurus and are meant to awaken the dormant Kundalini Shakti. The primary beej-akshara (seed syllable) associated with this tradition is 'Hrīm', which represents the creative and destructive power of Mahamaya. The phoneme 'Hrīm' combines the energies of the sun (Ha), the moon (Ra), and fire (Ī), culminating in the nasal 'M' that signifies the dissolution of duality. Chanting the Yogini Kaula Mantra is traditionally prescribed for Shakti realization, the attainment of siddhis (supernatural powers), and liberation (moksha). The 'Kaula texts' describe that this mantra should be chanted during the night, especially on new moon nights (Amavasya) or during the dark fortnight, as the Yoginis are believed to be most active then. The recommended count is 108 repetitions per session, performed with a rosary of rudraksha or crystal beads. Ritual setting includes a secluded space, often a cremation ground or a forest, where the practitioner offers red flowers, wine, and meat as part of the Kaula ritual. Cautions are necessary: this mantra is considered powerful and should only be chanted under the guidance of a qualified guru, as improper practice can lead to disturbances in the subtle body. The 'Mantra Mahodadhi' warns that the Yogini Kaula Mantra should not be chanted without proper initiation (diksha) and purification. The tradition holds that the Yoginis bestow blessings upon those who approach with devotion and purity of intent, granting protection, wisdom, and ultimate union with the Supreme Shakti.
