Dhanya Lakshmi Mantra

धान्य लक्ष्मी मन्त्र
Also known as: Food Grains Lakshmi, Agricultural Prosperity, Sustenance Wealth

About

The Dhanya Lakshmi mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to the aspect of Goddess Lakshmi who presides over food grains and agricultural abundance. According to the Lakshmi Purana, Dhanya Lakshmi is one of the eight primary forms of Lakshmi (Ashta Lakshmi), each governing a different facet of prosperity. This particular form is revered for ensuring food security, bountiful harvests, and the sustenance of all living beings. The mantra is traditionally chanted by farmers, agrarian communities, and householders seeking freedom from hunger and malnutrition. The primary mantra, 'Om Dhanya Lakshmyai Namah', consists of the bija 'Om' followed by the name of the goddess in the dative case, expressing salutation. The phoneme 'Dha' in 'Dhanya' is associated with the root 'dha' meaning to sustain or hold, reflecting the goddess's role as the sustainer through grain. The 'nya' syllable denotes abundance, while 'Lakshmyai' invokes the goddess of fortune. This mantra is often recited during harvest festivals such as Pongal and Makar Sankranti, as noted in regional agricultural traditions. The recommended chanting count is 108 times daily, preferably at dawn or during the waxing moon phase, facing east. Ritual setting includes offering rice grains, paddy, or freshly harvested produce before an image or yantra of the goddess. The Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 11) extols the goddess's grace in providing food, and the Annapurna Stotram similarly praises her as the giver of nourishment. While no strict cautions are prescribed, it is advised to maintain purity of body and mind, and to avoid chanting during inauspicious times like eclipses without proper guidance. The mantra is also chanted during the annual Lakshmi Puja in agrarian regions, seeking blessings for a prosperous crop cycle. The associated Dhanya Lakshmi Stotram elaborates on her iconography, depicting her with sheaves of grain, a pot of rice, and surrounded by harvest produce, symbolizing her role as the granter of agricultural wealth and the sustainer of life.
