Kubera Gayatri

कुबेर गायत्री
Also known as: Dhanapati Gayatri, Yaksha Raja Gayatri, Nidhipati Gayatri
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Kubera Gayatri is a Vedic-style mantra dedicated to Lord Kubera, the treasurer of the gods and the lord of wealth (Dhanapati). This mantra follows the classical Gayatri meter, invoking Kubera for blessings of prosperity and financial wisdom. The mantra is: 'Om Kuberaya Vidmahe Yaksha Rajaya Dhimahi Tanno Kubera Prachodayat.' It is found in later Tantric and Puranic texts, particularly the Kubera Tantra, which elaborates on its ritual use. The Puranas, such as the Vishnudharmottara Purana, describe Kubera as the king of the Yakshas and the custodian of the nine treasures (Nidhis). The beej-akshara 'Kleem' is often associated with Kubera, though the Gayatri itself does not contain it; the phonetics of 'Kuberaya' resonate with the earth element (Prithvi), grounding wealth.

Traditionally, this mantra is chanted for financial stability, wealth preservation, and success in business ventures. It is believed to attract material abundance while also fostering financial wisdom and ethical management of resources. According to the Shaktisangama Tantra, the mantra should be recited 108 times daily, preferably in the morning after bathing, facing north or east. Special recitations on Dhanteras and during Kubera Puja are considered highly auspicious. The recommended count for siddhi (perfection) is 125,000 repetitions over 40 days.

Ritual setting includes a clean space with a picture or idol of Kubera, offerings of yellow flowers, incense, and a lamp. Some traditions advise offering a citron fruit or a mongoose-shaped item, as the mongoose is Kubera's vahana and symbol of wealth. Cautions: This mantra should not be chanted with greed or for unethical gains. It is best performed under the guidance of a guru, as improper recitation may lead to imbalance. The mantra is pan-Indian and also worshiped in Nepal, where Kubera is revered as a household deity.
