Ksheera Sagara Mantra

क्षीर सागर मन्त्र
Also known as: Milk Ocean Mantra, Vishnu's Ocean, Samudra Manthan
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Ksheera Sagara Mantra is a sacred invocation directed toward the cosmic ocean of milk (Kshīra Sāgara), the celestial abode of Lord Vishnu and the source from which Goddess Lakshmi emerged during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). This mantra is primarily found in the Puranic tradition, with detailed accounts in the Bhagavata Purana (Canto 8, chapters 5–12) and the Vishnu Purana (Book 1, chapter 9). The Bhagavata Purana describes how the devas and asuras churned the ocean of milk to obtain the nectar of immortality, and from its depths arose Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The mantra is thus deeply associated with both Vishnu and Lakshmi, symbolizing the union of preservation and abundance.

Phonetically, the mantra often begins with the sacred syllable 'Om', which represents the primordial sound and the essence of the cosmos. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Hrīm' is sometimes included in variations, as it is associated with Lakshmi and the heart chakra, invoking her grace. The name 'Ksheera Sagara' itself is composed of 'Kshīra' (milk) and 'Sāgara' (ocean), evoking the vast, nurturing, and inexhaustible nature of divine abundance. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (a classical text on mantra shastra), mantras associated with the ocean of milk are chanted to attract the treasures of the cosmic ocean, including wealth, prosperity, and spiritual fulfillment.

The traditional purpose of the Ksheera Sagara Mantra is to invoke the blessings of Vishnu and Lakshmi for material and spiritual abundance. It is believed to purify the mind and environment, remove obstacles to prosperity, and bestow divine grace. The mantra is often chanted during the festival of Ekadashi, which is sacred to Vishnu, and during special pujas dedicated to the ocean of milk. Recommended chanting context includes early morning or evening, facing east or north, with a count of 108 times using a rudraksha or crystal mala. Ritual setting may involve offerings of milk, white flowers, and sweets to an image of Vishnu reclining on Shesha in the ocean of milk.

Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with reverence and proper pronunciation, as per the guidelines in the Shaktisangama Tantra. It is advised to maintain purity of mind and body, and to avoid chanting during inauspicious times such as during mourning or impurity. Those seeking only material wealth should balance the practice with spiritual intent to avoid attachment.
