Marakata Mantra

मरकत मन्त्र
Also known as: Emerald Gemstone, Mercury Gem, Marakata
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Marakata Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to the emerald gemstone (marakata), which in Hindu gemology (Ratna Shastra) is associated with the planet Mercury (Budha). According to the Ratna Shastra, emerald is the primary gem for Mercury, and its mantra is chanted to harmonize the planetary influence of Budha, thereby enhancing intelligence, communication skills, and commercial acumen. The mantra is often derived from the Bija (seed) syllables found in tantric texts such as the Mantra Mahodadhi, where each gemstone is assigned a specific beej mantra. The phoneme 'Bum' or 'Bam' is sometimes used as the core seed for Budha, but the Marakata Mantra typically incorporates the name of the gem itself, invoking its divine essence.

The purpose of this mantra, as described in Jyotisha texts, is to pacify a weak or afflicted Mercury in the birth chart, and to attract the blessings of Budha for success in trade, writing, public speaking, and education. It is also believed to bestow clarity of thought, wit, and the ability to make sound decisions. Traditionally, the mantra is chanted on Wednesdays, the day ruled by Mercury, and especially during the waxing moon phase. The recommended count is 108 repetitions per session, using a crystal or rudraksha mala.

The ritual setting should include a clean, green cloth, an emerald stone placed on a small copper or silver plate, and offerings of green leaves, flowers, or sweets. According to the Shaktisangama Tantra, gemstone mantras should be chanted with focused intention and purity of mind, avoiding any negative thoughts. Cautions include not chanting during eclipses or while impure, and ensuring the emerald is natural and unblemished. The Marakata Mantra is a powerful tool for those seeking to enhance their intellectual and communicative faculties, and to align with the benefic energy of Mercury.
