Ratna Mantra

रत्न मन्त्र
Also known as: Gemstone Mantras, Precious Stones, Navaratna
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Ratna Mantra refers to a set of mantras dedicated to the nine precious gemstones (Navaratna) that correspond to the nine planets (Navagrahas) of Vedic astrology. These mantras are primarily found in Jyotisha texts such as the Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira and the Ratna Shastra, which detail the properties and uses of gemstones. Each gemstone is associated with a specific planetary deity: ruby with Surya (Sun), pearl with Chandra (Moon), coral with Mangala (Mars), emerald with Budha (Mercury), yellow sapphire with Brihaspati (Jupiter), diamond with Shukra (Venus), blue sapphire with Shani (Saturn), hessonite with Rahu, and cat's eye with Ketu.

The beej-aksharas (seed syllables) for these mantras often derive from the planetary bija mantras, such as 'Om Hram' for the Sun or 'Om Shram' for Saturn, combined with the gemstone name. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, chanting these mantras activates the healing and prosperity energies of the gemstones, aligning the wearer's aura with planetary beneficence. The traditional purpose includes attracting wealth, enhancing health, and mitigating planetary afflictions.

Recommended chanting context includes reciting each mantra 108 times during the corresponding planetary hour (Hora) on a day ruled by that planet, while holding the gemstone. Ritual setting often involves a clean altar, a copper plate, and offerings of flowers and incense. Cautions: these mantras should be chanted only after proper initiation or guidance from a qualified guru, as incorrect pronunciation or timing may yield adverse effects.

The Agamas also prescribe specific rituals for consecrating gemstones before wearing them, emphasizing the mantra's role in purifying and energizing the stone.
