Ratna Shastra Dhyana Mantra

रत्न शास्त्र ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Ratna Shastra, Gemology, Precious Stones

About

The Ratna Shastra Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation used to deepen one's understanding of Ratna Shastra, the traditional Indian science of gemstones. This mantra is chanted to attune the practitioner to the subtle energies of precious stones, enabling proper selection and utilization of gems for planetary blessings and material prosperity. The textual origin of this mantra is found in classical Jyotisha texts and gemological treatises such as the *Ratna Shastra* (also known as *Ratna Pariksha*) and the *Brihat Samhita* of Varahamihira, which dedicates chapters to the characteristics and testing of gems (e.g., *Brihat Samhita* 80-83). The mantra is associated with the Navagrahas (nine planets), as each gemstone is believed to correspond to a planetary deity: ruby for Surya (Sun), pearl for Chandra (Moon), coral for Mangala (Mars), emerald for Budha (Mercury), yellow sapphire for Brihaspati (Jupiter), diamond for Shukra (Venus), blue sapphire for Shani (Saturn), hessonite for Rahu, and cat's eye for Ketu. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) often employed in these dhyana mantras is 'Om' followed by the planetary names, such as 'Om Suryaya Namah' for ruby. Phonetically, the mantra's resonance is designed to align the chanter's energy with the specific planetary frequencies. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to gain insight into the astrological and metaphysical properties of gems, to purify the stones before wearing, and to invoke the blessings of the Navagrahas for health, wealth, and protection. According to the *Mantra Mahodadhi* (a comprehensive mantra compendium), such dhyana mantras are best chanted during the auspicious time of sunrise, facing east, with a clear mind and a focused intention. The recommended count is 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala. Ritual setting includes a clean altar with the specific gemstone placed before the practitioner, along with offerings of flowers and incense. Cautions: The mantra should be chanted with reverence and correct pronunciation; improper use may not yield desired results. It is advised to consult a qualified guru or astrologer before selecting and wearing gemstones, as per the *Jyotisha* tradition. This mantra is not a substitute for medical or professional advice but serves as a spiritual aid for gemstone science.
