Sankha Nidhi Mantra

शङ्ख निधि मन्त्र
Also known as: Conch Treasure, Kubera's Eighth Treasure, Sankha Nidhi

About

The Sankha Nidhi Mantra is a sacred invocation directed toward Sankha Nidhi, the eighth of the nine treasures (nidhis) of Kubera, the god of wealth. According to the Kubera Purana and the Padma Purana, the nine nidhis are divine gems that bestow specific forms of prosperity. Sankha Nidhi, named after the conch (shankha), is associated with wealth that brings fame, recognition, and auspiciousness. The conch itself is a profound symbol in Hindu dharma: it represents the primordial sound of creation, purity, and victory. In the hands of Vishnu, the conch Panchajanya is a weapon that dispels evil and announces divine glory. The mantra 'Om Sankha Nidhaye Namah' is a beej-akshara (seed syllable) mantra; 'Om' is the primordial vibration, 'Sankha' refers to the conch, 'Nidhaye' means 'to the treasure,' and 'Namah' is a salutation. This mantra is chanted to invoke the energy of Sankha Nidhi, attracting wealth that is not merely material but also brings social standing, honor, and spiritual purity. The Lalita Sahasranama (verse 54) mentions 'Sankha Nidhi' among the attributes of the Goddess, indicating its association with divine abundance. Traditionally, this mantra is recited during Dhanteras and Diwali, especially while offering prayers to Kubera and Lakshmi. The recommended chanting count is 108 times daily, preferably in the morning after bathing, facing east. A ritual setting may include a clean altar with an image of Kubera or a conch shell filled with turmeric and rice. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with pure intentions and not for selfish or harmful purposes. It is advised to maintain cleanliness and avoid chanting during inauspicious times like eclipses or while impure. The mantra is considered safe for all, but consistent practice with devotion yields the best results.
