Santana Lakshmi Mantra

सन्तान लक्ष्मी मन्त्र
Also known as: Children Lakshmi, Progeny Goddess, Offspring Blessing
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Santana Lakshmi Mantra is a sacred invocation directed to Santana Lakshmi, the aspect of the goddess Lakshmi who presides over progeny, family continuity, and the welfare of children. This mantra is primarily chanted by couples seeking conception, healthy offspring, and the removal of obstacles to childbirth. The textual origin of this mantra is found in the Lakshmi Purana, which describes the eight forms of Lakshmi, including Santana Lakshmi as the bestower of children. Additionally, the Santana Gopala Stotra, a hymn dedicated to Krishna as the divine child, is often recited in conjunction with this mantra to reinforce the blessing of progeny. The mantra itself, typically rendered as "Om Santana Lakshmyai Namah," contains the beej-akshara "Om," the primordial sound, followed by the name of the goddess in the dative case, expressing surrender and devotion.

The phoneme "S" in Santana is associated with the energy of continuity and lineage, while "Lakshmyai" invokes the goddess's nurturing and prosperous aspect. Traditional purposes of this mantra include promoting fertility, ensuring safe pregnancy and delivery, and fostering a harmonious family environment. It is also believed to remove genetic or karmic impediments to having children. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, such mantras should be chanted with a clear mind and focused intention, preferably during the morning or evening hours, and on auspicious days like Putrada Ekadashi or during the Santana Lakshmi Vrat. The recommended count is 108 repetitions per session, using a rosary (japa mala) made of lotus seeds or crystal.

Ritual setting often includes a clean altar with an image or yantra of Santana Lakshmi, offerings of fruits, sweets, and flowers, and the lighting of a ghee lamp. Cautions: This mantra should not be chanted mechanically or without proper reverence. It is advised to maintain purity of body and mind, and to avoid chanting during periods of impurity such as menstruation or mourning. The mantra is considered safe for all, but those with serious medical conditions should also seek appropriate medical advice. The Santana Lakshmi Mantra thus serves as a powerful tool for invoking divine grace for the blessing of children and the perpetuation of family lineage.
